This neo-colonial city of white volcanic stone lies at 2,380 m above sea level in a fertile, irrigated valley surrounded by desert between the Andes and Peru\'s Pacific coast. Known as \"The City of Eternal Spring\", Arequipa receives less than 150mm of annual rainfall and the sun shines all year round. The close by canyons of Colca and Cotahuasi can be reached easily from Arequipa. At more than 3,400 m deep, they are considered the deepest canyons in the world, where condors rise above ancient Inca terracing and the whitewashed colonial churches of picturesque villages.
Itinerary
Below you can find a day-to-day description of the 3-day Arequipa Colca Canyon.
Day 1 AREQUIPA
Arriving in Arequipa transfer to the hotel and morning free for acclimatizing (2400 m). Afternoon city tour, visiting the most interesting churches and monasteries of this beautiful white city, we return to the hotel for overnight.
Day 2 AREQUIPA - COLCA CANYON
After breakfast we start our bus trip through volcanic countryside, passing wild herds of alpaca and vicuña and stopping at several viewpoints. Around noon we arrive at the village of Chivay where we get installed in our hotel. Afternoon visit to the natural hot springs of "La Calera" and return to the Lodge for overnight. (B)
Day 3 COLCA CANYON - AREQUIPA
We start early in the morning by bus towards the famous "Cruz del Condor", great scenic views into the depths of the Colca Canyon and best place to observe the majestic condors in their natural habitat. We have ample time to enjoy this spectacle and the valley before we return to Chivay and then to Arequipa. Arriving at the hotel in the late afternoon for overnight. (B)
